Aim: making a GMO animal example using a clay
What is GMO?
A GMO or genetically modified organism is a plant, animal, microorganism or other organisms whose genetic makeup has been modified in a laboratory using genetic engineering or transgenic technology. Genetically modified animals are animals that are genetically modified for a specific variation of purposes including drugs, enhancing field, increase resistance to disease and etc.
Processing
The process of genetically engineered animal or plant is a slow, boring time consuming, and expensive process. First, genetic engineers must to set apart or cut off the gene they want to insert it to the organism. This can be taken from cell, gene, or Artificial genes synthesis known as DNA printing (a method that is used to create artificial genes in the laboratory). If the gene or the donor organism genome(the genetic material of the organism) has been studied it will be may accessible from a genetic library. The genetic library is a collection of DNA fragments that are stored and breed specimens of a plant or animal. There are two types of genetic library, cDNA library and Genomic library.
cDNA library represents a collection of only the only genes that are encoded or convert into proteins by an organism. A Genomic library is a collection is a set of DNA clones that contains the entire DNA content of a genome fro which library was obtained or received.
Then the gene is then combined with other gene elements like promoter, terminator and selectable marker. The promoter is a sequence of DNA needed to turn a gene on or off. Terminator is a genetic part that usually occurs at the end of the gene and causes transcription(first several steps in gene expression) to stop. A selectable marker is a gene introduced into a cell that confers a trait suitable for selective breeding.
Equipment: Clay (any colours)
Method of making a glofish out of clay
1. Get clay.
2. Shaping the clay into an animal
3. Do detail on the clay model.
4. Leave the clay model to dry.
5. Done.
